A Practical Approach for IT Governance

OnDemand CIO

A few months back I had written a short blog on a shared services model for a CIO.  Having done this now for well over two years now, I feel the critical success factors for making the OnDemand model work are as follows:

  1. You should be using an appropriate IT Governance framework.
  2. You should have slack time and back up resources – just like a CPU, 100% load will prevent any useful work from getting done.
  3. Again using the CPU model, you should be able to “pipeline” multiple streams of work.
  4. You must be willing to sacrifice long vacations – a week here or there can be accommodated, but rarely will you be able to have the luxury of taking weeks at a time.
  5. You must use your spare time to “keep” up.  Cloud computing, security, compliance, global sourcing, new technologies, updates to older technologies, etc. are some of the areas to continuously learn and improve.

Remember, IT is a journey.

Disclaimer:  I started doing OnDemand CIO to help perfect the Governance product I was building with a small global team headed by an able CTO.  The product is currently in Beta test.
