A Practical Approach for IT Governance

The Three Myths in Managing IT

with 2 comments

Myth 1: There are only two certainties in life – actually there is a third: There is always more IT work than $$ available.

Myth 2: A CIO’s role is all about strategy – actually most CIO’s spend a majority of their time managing the department and verifying that IT dollars are spent on the right thing, and just as importantly, at the right time.

Myth 3: IT Delivery is all about implementing ITIL or delivery to a standard – actually true IT Governance is about developing and customizing a process that is not onerous and adopted across the organization.

  1. Myth 1: By keeping business alignment sessions on schedule and involving executives one should be able to shortlist priorities and be able to deliver within available $. Without alignment meetings it’s natural expectations list would be long and make $ look less.

Myth 2: CIO focus should be “Business Strategy” and act as advisor “Business Transformation Leader.” This should help translate expectations to his/her key staff in the IT organization and let them develop IT Strategy for CIO. This is wheel turning forward.

Myth 3: Establish easy to use protocol in line with audit expectations and able to run operations secure and risk free with a confidence in self and the drivers of business.
