Are we on the right track?

I was pleased to attend the CIO Summit in Santa Barbara. Though organized by a vendor (KeyInfo), I found that the conference was devoid of any “commercials”. In fact it was also devoid of PowerPoint which made the sessions more valuable. In fact the only PowerPoint was from a comedian who entertained with wit that actually carried sound advice. His definition of CIO as the person responsible for information but does not know anything about it, though intended as a joke, actually has a ring of truth in it.

I met some outstanding CIOs in the conference and made me realize that not all CIOs are old-school. Many CIOs feel like I do, that our role is not just information management but provide leadership in innovating the Enterprise. Detailed discussions with many CIOs helped me understand that innovation is not just about the big things such as a new products or strategies impacting the Enterprise at large, but innovation could be simple and localized as well. This led me to think of a new definition of CIO – no not just Chief Innovation Officer, but Chief Inspiration Officer inspiring others to innovate.
